Placenta: Art | Ritual

Since my doula training in 2024, I’ve been deeply fascinated by the placenta in a very special way.
Without a placenta, there is no new life. It is your baby’s first home – nourishing, protecting, and connecting you to your child throughout the entire pregnancy.

But what happens afterward?
Often, the placenta is discarded as medical waste after being checked by the midwife – without receiving much attention or meaning.

Yet it hasn’t always been this way – in many cultures around the world, the placenta still holds deep symbolic and spiritual significance.

It is, for example, referred to as:

  • The “baby’s twin”
  • The “outer soul”
  • The “double”
  • The “guardian angel"

Isn’t that a beautiful image?

In many cultures, the placenta is treated with great respect and gratitude – and returned to nature through a ritual: by burial, burning, or a symbolic gesture.

I wish for us to relearn how to honor the placenta and recognize it for what it truly is: a unique symbol of life.

Placenta Art – A Creative and Spiritual Expression

The placenta is not only an organic miracle but also a source of inspiration.

How can you work creatively with the placenta?

  • Placenta print – an image, created just the way you like it
  • Amnion moon – the amniotic sac is dried and shaped into a full or crescent moon, a powerful symbol of feminine energy
  • Dreamcatcher – crafted from the umbilical cord, as a protective charm for your child

If you would like to have such a unique keepsake, feel free to get in touch with me.

What are your options?

  • We can create the artwork together
  • You can entrust me with your placenta, and I will lovingly create something meaningful for you, based on your wishes

Whichever path you choose – your placenta will be treated by me with the utmost respect, gratitude, and care.

Placenta Ritual – A Conscious Closure

A ritual around the placenta can be a deeply moving moment of connection, gratitude, and letting go – a conscious closing of the birth chapter and a symbolic beginning of your new role as a mother.

Would you like to create a placenta ritual together?
I would be honored to support you in this personal and often very emotional moment – with calm, empathy, and respect.

This might include:

  • Explanation of the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic sac
  • Creative expression (e.g., print or artwork)
  • Burial, burning, or planting together with a tree – as a symbol of new life that can grow from your placenta

Feel free to contact me. Together we can create your very own ceremony. Everything is possible – nothing is required.
